1st time apartment renter needing info.?
You didn't mention whether you have a job. If you don't, don't get your hopes up too high. Usually you'll list your employer as a reference who can be checked. If you're rented--those people you stayed with and paid rent do count as rentals--give them as a rental reference and notify them that they may get a call to verify that you did rent and paid your rent in full on time. Not sure why your roommate situation wouldn't count unless you were subleasing. You could get a co-signer but that co-signer would be responsible if you default on your rent and not many people want that added expense these days. If you feel real shaky about getting the place, you can offer to pay for first month's rent, and for last month's rent up front so if you default and the landlord has to find a new renter he'd at least have 2 months rent out of you. Just keep in mind that everyone had to start at some point.
