What's the term that means an artist's most famous work?

I know for a fact that there is a word for an artist's best-known work, like Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", or Don McLean's "American Pie", or Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa", but I've encountered it only once and can't find it anywhere now.
